In 1995, Shirley D. found out that her kidneys were failing. As a single mother with two kids and a full-time job, this was more than just difficult news. Shirley began dialysis soon after, and her sister arranged to help out with her kids. Shirley eventually had to stop working full-time at the Department of Social Services.

Meanwhile, her family adjusted to the changes, nicknaming her "The Bionic Woman" because she was so strong. When times were tough, she reminded herself to push through it for her children. She grew close to her nephrologist and transplant team, who made her feel comfortable and able to tell them exactly how she was feeling.

After 5 years of dialysis, Shirley received a kidney transplant in 2002. Since then, Shirley has helping to care for her new kidney by drinking enough water and watching the salt in her diet. She also continues to take her kidney medicine, including myfortic® (mycophenolic acid) delayed-release tablet. She's working full-time again, enjoys hobbies like cross-stitching and painting, and appreciates what she has every day.
